The Soul in the Machine

2025 → Design Academy Eindhoven

This exhibition explores sound systems as technologies of resistance and creators of safe spaces for liberation, focusing on queer club and rave culture in Italy from the 1960s to the 1990s. It responds to the 2022 “anti-rave decree” issued by the current Italian government, which targeted unauthorized rave parties under the guise of protecting public order. Using VJ techniques and visuals that respond to bass frequencies, the project traces the history of techno and rave culture in Europe and Italy, highlighting how queer nightlife in cities like Bologna, Florence, and Rome became a vital form of defiance and community building. The exhibition calls attention to the importance of protecting these cultural spaces in the face of renewed state repression, framing the issue as part of a larger societal struggle for freedom and self-expression.
