Hacking Love

2025 → Design Academy Eindhoven

Starting with Hinge’s matchmaking system, this research explores the hidden complexity of how dating app algorithms influence the way users present themselves and connect with others. Designed to find the most compatible partner, the algorithm analyzes user behavior — from profile creation to swiping patterns, likes, and responses — and assigns a hidden score that determines match potential. This score rises or falls based on how many likes a user receives and how they engage with others, including interactions with features like “roses,” Hinge’s symbol of heightened interest. This constant ranking system can turn a genuine search for love into a self-conscious performance, pushing users to focus more on how they’re being scored than on authentic connection. Enter the “love guru” — an online persona, often found on YouTube, who presents themselves as a dating coach. These figures offer tips, tricks, and so-called hacks to boost scores, attract better matches, and game the system. But rather than offering empowerment, they often exploit users’ insecurities and profit from the anxiety of navigating romance in an algorithm-driven world.
