Criptype
Designed collaborating with: Damiana Facen
2021 → ISIA of Urbino
Cryptype features geometric, rigid forms inspired by the iconic notdef glyph—the placeholder symbol that appears when a character can’t be rendered. The core concept is to make each letter echo this unreadable box, so the text looks cryptic and deceptive at first glance, as if it were composed entirely of missing characters. Built around the same rectangular frame as the notdef symbol, Cryptype is a monospaced typeface and, for most of its glyphs, also monocase. It turns the idea of illegibility into a design language, transforming every line of text into an enigmatic code waiting to be deciphered.
