WHEN WORDS ARE NO LONGER SAFE

Research and Project materialization created with: Zhiyi Lan, Li Qiu, Luca Weste

2025 → Design Academy Eindhoven

This design research project explores how emojis act as alternative forms of communication in protests where language is censored or monitored. Focusing on Black Lives Matter, MeToo, and pro-Palestinian activism, it shows how emojis help build symbolic identity, circumvent censorship, and amplify emotion. The project included the production of a series of posters displayed around the streets of Eindhoven, designed to highlight access points through which people could visit the website we created.

The interactive website allows visitors to learn how this new form of protest communication through emojis works, and features protest overviews, emoji histories, data visualizations, and a downloadable research document. To counter the impermanence of online information, the project also includes an offline booklet (with an additional case study on COVID-19 protests) and stickers designed for public engagement and privacy protection. Overall, the project asks how visual language can sustain collective memory, solidarity, and resistance when words alone are no longer safe.
